Comparison between IN and AT

Різниця між прийменниками місця IN та AT

📌 The preposition in indicates the space in the building 

The visitors were in the school. (= the building)

Everybody was quiet in the library. (= in the room of the building)

📌 The preposition at indicates the function in the building

We were at school. (= for lessons)

I was at the library doing some research. (= as a place to do a research)

 

I’m in the hospital. – Я в лікарні (я госпіталізований).

I’m at the hospital. – Я в лікарні (як відвідувач, прийшов до когось).

🔹 IN – вказує на простір усередині будівлі

The visitors were in the school. – Відвідувачі були в школі. (= у самій будівлі)
Everybody was quiet in the library. – Усі були тихі в бібліотеці. (= у кімнаті будівлі)
👉 Тобто IN підкреслює, що ми перебуваємо всередині приміщення.

🔹 AT – вказує на функцію будівлі
We were at school. – Ми були в школі. (= як учні на уроках)
I was at the library doing some research. – Я був у бібліотеці, робив дослідження. (= як місце для виконання функції)
👉 Отже, AT вживається, коли говоримо про будівлю як про місце, де виконується певна дія чи функція.

AT

• in the book 
• in the open air

Ці вирази виглядають дуже схоже, але мають різне значення та вживаються у різних ситуаціях. Давайте розберемося!

✅ AT THE END

📌 Значення: у певній точці, коли щось закінчується
📍 Вживається з: подіями, місцями, часовими періодами

🔸 Структура: at the end of + іменник

Ukrainian: в кінці (чогось)

🧾 Приклади:

• At the end of the film, everyone clapped.
   ➡️ У кінці фільму всі аплодували.

• At the end of July, I’m going on vacation.
   ➡️ Наприкінці липня я їду у відпустку.

• The library is at the end of the street.
   ➡️ Бібліотека знаходиться в кінці вулиці.

📌 Значення: врешті-решт, у підсумку, після довгого часу чи зусиль
📍 Вживається, щоб показати результат або завершення ситуації

• In the end, we decided to stay home.
   ➡️ Врешті-решт ми вирішили залишитися вдома.

• She worked hard and, in the end, passed the exam.
   ➡️ Вона старанно вчилася і зрештою склала іспит.

   ➡️ Було важко, але все зрештою вийшло добре.
