CV / RESUME

In this lesson, we will learn what a CV and a résumé are. We’ll explore the differences between them to help you understand which one to use. We will also examine the main components of a CV and discover how to write it effectively successfully.

When you apply for a job, you are required to enclose your CV (Curriculum Vitae) or Resume (AmE). It is a written record of your education and employment. 

If you are confused about the difference between a CV and a résumé, you’re not alone. They’re both used to apply for jobs, and on the surface they look similar.

Many people even use these terms interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings and serve different purposes.

How to Write a Good CV

There is lots of advice and CV samples and a lot of them differ so it's hard to say exactly what the perfect CV is. I'd say a good CV should cover no more than two pages of A4 paper and be divided into clear headings.

1. Personal Information – include your name, date of birth, and address.telephone number, email and things. Some employers like to see a photo, too. You can always phone the company and find out.
2. Education / Qualifications – list schools, universities, courses, and certificates starting with the most recent things.
3. Work Experience – describe previous jobs, internships, or volunteer work, again starting with the most recent job. I think it's important here to be brief so use bullet points and action verbs. You don't need to use complete sentences as long as it's very clear what you've done.
4. Skills - soft skills (сommunication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, creativity, etc.), professional skills (IT and foreign languages), abilities, and personal qualities.
5. Interests - An employer likes to know what kind of person you are and things like team sports, for example.
6. Referees – provide contacts of people who can recommend you (teachers, employers).

Perhaps the most important thing is to show how you meet the criteria in the job advertisement. Make it easy for the employer to ask you to an interview.
