Learn the difference between the verbs ‘to study – to learn’

TO STUDY

TO LEARN

They are rather close synonyms. In a general sense they both mean to get knowledge, to acquire information - вчити

To study is to get the theory of the subject by reading books, attending classes at school or college.  - вивчати

e.g.  He is studying biology at university.

e.g. At 17 he moved to Kyiv to study law.

 - навчатися

e.g. Robert studies to be a doctor.

To learn is to get new knowledge or practical skills and know how to do it. – навчитися

e.g. I want to learn how to drive.

e.g. I’m learning to be a hairdresser.

To study is used mainly when we mean the process itself; it is used in a wider and more general sense than to learn.

So to learn, as a rule, means the result of the process of studying.

e.g. I studied the rules for reading but I haven’t learnt them yet.

It means: I have worked on these rules, but the result is not yet satisfactory, I must study more before I can learn them.

To study may have an additional shade of meaning, namely, to investigate, to examine closely. розглядати

e.g. He studied her face very carefully in hope that it would tell him her thoughts.

To learn may have an additional shade of meaning, namely, to master something.

e.g. the learn the language

To learn may also mean to make progress,

e.g. the child learns quickly.

We learn facts, words, numbers or lines (often by heart) - вчити

e.g. Mary has learnt the poem well.

Learn = find out = get to know - дізнатися
